After information emerged that Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic had scheduled an urgent session of the National Security Council tomorrow, at 8 am, because, as some media reported – „in the next 48 hours a destabilization of the security situation in the north of Kosovo could occur“, the Serbian President sent an open letter to Kosovo Serbs. „Peace is our greatest interest. Challenges we are facing require us to be above the disagreement, manipulation and targeted disinformation campaigns „- said Vucic. He also said to the citizens: „That is why I ask you and urge you not to fall for any provocations, to respond to all possible challenges in a peaceful, civilized and dignified manner“; „There will be no new ‘Storm (Operation)’ in KiM“; „Peace for Serbia and the Serbian people is the highest value.“ He had a message for both KFOR and NATO. Of which he „specifically expects and demands “ that they „protect the peace by preventing any possible attempt, by anybody and under any pretext, to occupy and take the Gazivode Hydroelectric Power Plant, Valac power station or any other key infrastructure facility upon which your survival depends.“ We present the letter, published by the Belgrade media, in its entirety:
„Dear Serbs,
Tomorrow, August 4th, the deadline given by the European Union to the Provisional Institutions of Self-Government in Pristina to complete the adoption of the Statute of the Association of Serb Municipalities on the basis of the Brussels Agreement will expire.
On the day before the expiration of the latest deadline for Pristina’s obligations in the formation of the Association of Serb Municipalities and on the 1930th day after Pristina signed and took over that obligation, all the warnings and suspicions I have been expressing the entire time are being realized and confirmed. This time either, Pristina will not lift a finger to form the Association of Serb Municipalities.
Dear Serbs, please do not undertake anything in this regard that certain Albanian individuals or certain individuals in the international community would use as an excuse to take any action against you.
And that is why, these days in our southern province, but also in the smaller part of the international community, a word is heard loudly and the actions are seen clearly of those who, instead of fulfilling their obligations towards Serbia and the Serbs, use this period in order to bring unrest and fear among the Serbian people in Kosovo and Metohija, with daily threats and organized spreading of rumors, hoping for panic, with the aim of provoking mistrust in state institutions of Serbia, creating a rift among the political representatives of Serbs in Kosovo and the overall weakening of our position in a sensitive stage of negotiations.
Dear fellow citizens, for this very reason, peace is our greatest interest. Challenges we are facing require us to be above the disagreement, manipulation and targeted disinformation campaigns. Therefore, I ask you and urge you not to fall for any provocations, to respond to all possible challenges in a peaceful, civilized and dignified manner, and we will be committed to providing security and a future for you in those areas using political methods.
Serbia is ready today to fulfill its commitment towards you and to protect your lives and peace, if that is necessary. While I am at its helm, Serbia will not allow organized violence against Serbs and their sanctities, nor their persecution. There will be no new ‘Storm’ in Kosovo and Metohija. Peace for Serbia and the Serbian people is the highest value, which, in addition to everything else, we are trying to protect, through the difficult discussions we are having with the political representatives of the Albanians and the international community.
In addition to us, who are honestly committed to this, the preservation of peace in our southern province is also the primary task of the KFOR mission and NATO, of which I specifically expect and demand that they protect the peace by preventing any possible attempt, by anybody and under any pretext, to occupy and take the Gazivode Hydroelectric Power Plant, Valac power station or any other key infrastructure facility upon which your survival depends.
For your sake and for the future of entire Serbia, we will continue to advocate, in an exclusively peaceful way, for compromise and a comprehensive solution of the relations in Kosovo and Metohija, and we will not stop until we provide, in every way, more for our people than what we have today.
I sincerely wish all the best to you and your families,
Aleksandar Vucic,
President of the Republic of Serbia“.
