Two Kosovo flags were hoisted in front of the North Mitrovica municipal building around noon today.
The flags are situated near the trilingual sign, installed immediately after the new mayor of this municipality took office on May 19.
The inscription on the trilingual sign placed on this building announcing it as to be the North Mitrovica municipal building is first written in Albanian, followed by Serbian and finally in English. The only ethnic Serbian councilor in this MA, Dusan Milunovic, recently pointed out in an interview for KoSSev that this order of languages on the panel violated the law on the use of languages.
“In North Mitrovica, the sign should first be in Serbian, then Albanian, then English,” he said at the time, announcing that the municipal coat of arms is also being prepared.
On the same day the Albanian mayor Erden Atic took office, three Kosovo flags were displayed on the municipal building in North Mitrovica, a Serb-majority town.
Today, two more flags, this time on masts, were set up in the municipal yard.
The withdrawal from institutions at the end of last year, followed by the boycott of extraordinary local elections in April by Serbs, resulted in the fact that there are almost no representatives of the Serbian community in local institutions in the north.
The mayors of North Mitrovica, Zvecan, Zubin Potok and Leposavic are all ethnic Albanians.
However, North Mitrovica is the only municipality that has been functioning since the Serbs withdrew.
Taking into consideration the less than 10 decisions made by councilors in this municipal assembly in the new convocation, the Office for Infrastructure and Construction Inspection is currently the most active one.
In the last couple of days, they decided to suspend construction of at least five buildings in downtown North Mitrovica, due to the lack of valid documentation.
