The Kosovo Police have issued nine eviction orders for Serbian Post (Pošta Srbije) facilities located north of the Ibar River. The orders, confirmed by the Serbian Post to the news outlet KoSSev, are part of a series of actions taken by Kosovo authorities, sparking heightened tensions in the region.
Early in August, a coordinated police action led to the closure and sealing of Serbian Post branches across Northern Kosovo, including three branches in Kosovska Mitrovica, two in Zvečan, one in Zubin Potok, and three in Leposavić.
On November 8, an additional escalation occurred when the contents of the Serbian Post’s main branch in Kosovska Mitrovica were removed. Witnesses reported seeing items loaded into vans bearing Serbian Post markings and registration plates from Vranje, all under the watchful supervision of Kosovo Police.
Inventory Evacuated from the Main Branch of Serbian Post in North Mitrovica
The Serbian Post later confirmed this removal to KoSSev, explaining that the branch had been rented and that clearing out inventory was necessary.
However, they were quick to assert that this action would not extend to their other eight branches in the northern municipalities, reiterating that these properties were, in their view, legally owned by the Serbian Post.
In contrast, Kosovo authorities contend that these buildings belong to local governments under Albanian administration. According to the Serbian Post, eviction orders cite this alleged lack of ownership as grounds for the police action, a move they describe as an attempt to pressure them into vacating the premises.
“We have no intention of vacating these remaining properties,” the Serbian Post stated, pledging resistance against further forced evictions.
The Serbian Post also warned that it would alert relevant local and international institutions should there be any attempt to seize property or inventory from these locations, framing the issue as a violation of the rights and interests of the Serbian Post and its employees.
Additionally, the Serbian Post referenced accusations made by Kosovo authorities that it has operated „illegally“ in the territory, a matter currently under judicial review.
„Postal facilities north of the Ibar River are now closed by the prosecutor’s orders while legal proceedings are ongoing,“ the Serbian Post added.
The Serbian Post has thus far not responded to questions regarding the status of its facilities south of the Ibar River, leaving the future of its operations in Kosovo uncertain.
