In a move highlighting the ongoing takeover of facilities previously used by Serbian institutions by Kosovo authorities, Serbian Post (Pošta Srbije) today removed its inventory from the main branch in North Mitrovica. This operation follows the recent closure of all nine Serbian Post offices in northern Kosovo.
Serbian Post clarified that the inventory removal was necessary due to the premises’ rental status, stating they would not remove items from properties they „fully own“.
„Since the premises were rented and the Post has been temporarily closed due to a forceful action by Kosovo police, and since Serbian Post can no longer use that space, it was essential to empty it,“ the company stated in response to a query from KoSSev.
The inventory was loaded into vans bearing Serbian Post logos and registered in Vranje, a town in southern Serbia.
The operation was overseen by plainclothes Kosovo police officers, with an official vehicle parked nearby. Officers on-site confirmed they had received orders to clear all inventory from the former Serbian Post premises.
KoSSev reached out to the Kosovo Police in the North region. However, they directed us to the Kosovo Police in the Pristina region, stating that their units were overseeing this operation.
Serbian Post’s action today highlights a larger issue in the region. In early August, all nine Serbian Post facilities in northern Kosovo were closed following a police action by Kosovo authorities. The closures affected three locations in Mitrovica, two in the municipality of Zvečan, one in Zubin Potok, and three in Leposavić, effectively halting Serbian Post services in the region.
Postal services through Serbian Post had been suspended for months prior to this escalation. In a separate statement, Serbian Post this evening emphasized that while they would comply with orders to vacate rented premises, they would not do so in buildings they own.
“Regarding other properties owned by Serbian Post, despite eviction orders, Serbian Post will not proceed with inventory removal. If inventory is forcibly seized, we will inform all relevant domestic and international bodies,” the statement read.
