Religious and cultural sites in Kosovo have survived for centuries due to the protection of the people of Kosovo. Kosovo is a mosaic of different cultures and religions, the Kosovo Prime Minister, Avdullah Hoti claimed today.

Hoti’s message arrives amid tensions in Decani after the construction of the Decani-Plav road through the special protective zone around the Visoki Decani Monastery continued, which the clergy of this monastery are strongly objecting to. They warned the international representatives, after which the works were suspended at the request of Hoti.

„Kosovo is a mosaic of different cultures and religions. Religious and cultural sites of all ethnicities and faiths in Kosovo are the common value and memory of our society and have survived for centuries due to the protection by the people of Kosovo. This is a commitment rooted in our tradition,” Hoti posted on Facebook.

“What’s enough is enough” – the mayor of Decani, Bashkim Ramosaj said just a few hours earlier, in a reaction to Hoti’s decision to suspend the construction. Ramosaj demanded a solution for the dispute from the Prime Minister, alleging that the “many injustices” or “misfortunes” inflicted on Decani prevent the economic development of this municipality.

He also addressed a 15-point letter to Kosovo officials, in which he presented his view of the problems and solutions to the dispute between the municipality of Decani and monastery Visoki Decani. Among other things, he claims that the Law on Special Protective Zones, cited by the church and now defended by Hoti, along with the decision of the Constitutional Court from 2016 to return 24 ha of land to the monastery, is the cause of „dispute“ and „misfortune“. He also urged the government to accept the proposal for the monastery of Visoki Decani to no longer be monitored by KFOR, but by the Kosovo Police – which the monks also oppose.

Abbot Sava Janjic, whom Ramosaj called „crazy“ two days ago, although without specifically saying his name, has been actively explaining the position of the church and the monastery for the last several days.

The church does not oppose the construction of the road, but the route passing through the SPZ. The Abbot recalled the decision on the construction of the bypass, which was made back in 2014, at the time Hashim Thaci was the Prime Minister.

„This solution is the only solution within the existing law on Special Protective Zones,“ Janjic emphasized.
