“Although the future of normalization talks between Belgrade and Pristina remains unclear, it is imperative that any final agreement take into account the rights of ethnic Albanians and address opportunities for economic growth in the Preshevo Valley,” US congressmen, Eliot Engel wrote in a letter to the Mayor of the Municipality of Presevo, Shqiprim Arifi.
According to the letter published by the Pristina-based Zeri newspaper, the Mayor of Presevo will be visiting the United States between February 11th and February 13th and Engel requested a meeting with Arifi during his visit to discuss „Presevo Valley”.
Engel is the Chairman of the House Foreign Affairs Committee. He is also known as a longtime lobbyist for Kosovo independence and the rights of Albanians in general.
“I am dedicated to ensuring minority rights in the region,” Engel wrote, noting that he is a long-time supporter of the Albanian people.
A postage stamp bearing Engel’s likeness was issued in Kosovo at the end of 2017, while a boulevard in Pec/Peja was named after him. Engel – a Jewish American Democrat and a member of the US Congress since 1988 – is also a frequent guest in Pristina.
