Volunteers of the Association for Protection of Animals „Šapa“, organized on Monday a protest walk to mark one year since an incident – a firearm attack of stray dogs in North Mitrovica. They hope it will not be repeated.
The protest walk was named after one of the dogs killed, Sima Medeni („The honeybee Sima“), who, although a stray dog had been taken care of and loved by a group of Mitrovica citizens.
The volunteers also took a walk with their pets along the main street in Mitrovica.
A journalist, Tanja Vujisic, who is one of the organisers, said that the last years incident in which several dogs were shot dead by an unknown person, or persons, was a criminal offense punishable by law.
The town also faces a problem with more abandoned dogs and an increasing number of stray dogs who are not taken care of properly.
„Therefore, we wanted to appeal to the people that the solution cannot be beating or killing them. Instead, they can either volunteer or help us get as many dogs as possible in a shelter,“ she said to local Radio Kontakt plus .
Vujisic has increased hope that the local authorities will recognize the urgency of the matter and work on a long-term solution.
The animal protection association was established last year.
