„Why has he changed the borders? Why has he changed the borders of Serbia in 2008? I want him to answer the question, because I asked him it, because he provokes it, it carries with itself, both the risk and the price – for the Serbs it has brought a huge risk and price – so why have you changed the borders of 2008? So why did you bring down Serbia in ’99? And for this, you will find justification in a humanitarian disaster. Why did you change the borders in 2008? And why did you change them in ’91 and ’92? – these are questions that the President of Serbia, Aleksandar Vucic, posed the British ambassador to Belgrade Denis Keefe. Keefe previously said that the idea of exchanging territory or partition carries a risk and a price, and it is also an important question of whether it will work and make progress.
President Vucic continued with his questions: „And what are the risks we’ll have if there is no agreement? We are talking about a frozen conflict. Do you understand that there is no frozen conflict in its substance? That everyone here is waiting for it to hit the other side? Do you want to wage wars? You want clashes? I will not. I will not.“
He says that he „wants to believe“ that Keefe had a good intention and that he „uttered such a sentence with the best intent“:
„But I am waiting to get the answer – why did you change the borders of 2008 and why did you, within a few days, recognize the independence of Kosovo, contrary to Resolution 1244, contrary to international public law? Being sui generis as such. So once you decide, you have the right to say that it is a sui generis case or a special case, and when the people decide on something, then they do not have the right to do so?“
