One of the employees of North Mitrovica detention facility tested positive for coronavirus, the head of the provisional Serbia-sponsored authority in Kosovska Mitrovica, Aleksandar Spiric announced, adding that a team of epidemiologists from central Serbia will arrive to North Mitrovica today. In the meantime, epidemiologist Aleksandar Antonijevic confirmed for KoSSev that another person from the north of Kosovo has also been infected. A total of five people from Kosovo Serb communities have tested positive for COVID-19 so far.

KoSSev revealed that the fourth person to test positive for coronavirus works in a detention unit in North Mitrovica. Since this institution operates under the Kosovo system, his sample was sent for testing to Pristina. The infected man is feeling well. He reached out to doctors after one of his colleagues attended an event at which one of the other confirmed cases allegedly got infected, and after experiencing flu-like symptoms accompanied by fever. He is currently receiving treatment at the North Mitrovica Clinical Center.

The head of the provisional Serbia-sponsored authority in Kosovska Mitrovica, Aleksandar Spiric said that the patient would be transported to the Clinical Center in Nis.

According to Spiric, seven more samples taken from prison staff, who have shown symptoms and attended the same event, have been sent to Pristina for analysis, while results are expected by the end of the day.

He confirmed that a team of epidemiologists from central Serbia will arrive in North Mitrovica during the day, adding that a detailed plan on the organization of the hospital and accommodation facilities for the admission of infected persons, as well as their treatment, will be established jointly with the epidemiologists.

„The current situation is worrying,“ Spiric warned, urging all citizens of North Mitrovica to behave responsibly and respect prevention measures.

He also sent an appeal to those who were in contact with infected persons.

„Anyone who has been in contact with people who have tested positive to COVID-19 must contact the epidemiologists as soon as possible. We ask that anyone who has had any contact with people who were at the wedding on March 14th to contact the epidemiologists if they have any symptoms,“ Spiric emphasized.

In the meantime, epidemiologist Aleksandar Antonijevic confirmed for KoSSev that another person from North Mitrovica, whose sample was sent for testing on Friday, has also tested positive for coronavirus.

Nine other samples have been sent to the Torlak Institute, the results, however, have yet to arrive – Antonijevic added.

The first coronavirus case (a 62-year-old woman) in Kosovo Serb communities was recorded last Friday in a village near Gracanica. She is currently being treated at the Clinical Center in Nis.

On the other hand, the first two cases of coronavirus in northern Kosovo were recorded on Sunday. Both patients, a 43-year-old man from North Mitrovica and a 48-year-old man from Leposavic municipality, are now in Nis after being previously treated at North Mitrovica Hospital Center.
