Kosovo’s Special Prosecutor’s Office and Kosovo police have arrested five Serbian nationals from the Pomoravlje region, accusing them of war crimes committed during the 1999 conflict. The detainees, including five individuals from the village of Pasjane, face allegations related to violent acts including murder, arson, and sexual assault against Albanian civilians.
The arrests have drawn significant controversy. Serbian officials, including the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, have condemned the move as a form of collective punishment targeting the Serbian community. They argue that the detained individuals are innocent local residents being unfairly targeted due to their ethnicity and the upcoming election cycle. Serbian authorities claim these actions threaten the survival of Serbs in Kosovo and urge international bodies to intervene.
Defense lawyers representing the detained Serbs have challenged the allegations, arguing that the accusations are baseless. They have requested a more lenient pre-trial detention measure, citing the advanced age and poor health of their clients. A €10,000 bond has been offered, and the defense team contends that the detention is an excessive and unjust measure.
The Raška-Prizren Diocese has also expressed concern over the arrests. The diocese supports the innocence of the detainees and suggests that the arrests may be politically motivated. This view aligns with broader criticisms from Serbian officials, including President Aleksandar Vučić, who has denounced the actions as part of a larger pattern of Western hypocrisy and double standards.
In response to the detentions, Vučić has called for greater international support to counter what he describes as unjust practices against Serbs in Kosovo. He has accused international representatives of turning a blind eye to the plight of the Serbian community and has vowed to engage in discussions with international stakeholders to address these issues.
Speaking tonight ahead of the 29th anniversary of Operation Storm, Vučić addressed the Kosovo authorities with the following message:
„To those in Kosovo and Metohija who are arresting Serbs every day, who want to arrest every house of ours, and who have the tacit support and consent of the great and powerful who only care about how Serbia will react. They don’t care how many Serbs will be displaced, how many Serbs will be left without their homes, and how many Serbs will remain in Priština’s dungeons. Let me tell them this in one sentence: The darkest hour is just before the dawn. The darkest hour is just before the dawn, and you know I know what I’m talking about.“
The Basic Court in Priština has ordered a one-month detention for the accused, pending further legal proceedings. The situation remains tense as various stakeholders continue to voice their concerns and demands for justice.
