The Kosovo Police (KP) operation in the northern part of Kosovo resulting in arrest of four Serbs suspected of involvement in Oliver Ivanovic’s killing contains the signature of President of Kosovo. He wants to keep the Serb-controlled northern part of the country under continuous tension at any cost.
Everybody was waiting for President Hashim Thaci’s reaction on the Kosovo Government’s action on Wednesday to impose a 100% customs tax for all goods coming from Serbia. But two days have passed and Thaci spoke no word about customs tariffs. Remaining silent on such an important decision is highly unusual for the Kosovo President who usually comments on developments happening all over the world. But following Friday’s action by the Kosovo Police special units in the northern part of the country, it looks like Thaci’s decision to remain silent was only tactical. The man who has tight control over state prosecution, the police, and Kosovo’s Intelligence Agency, has finally made his move. What he was planning to accomplish through direct negotiations with the Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic in the EU-facilitated dialogue in Brussels, now Thaci wants to achieve with direct intervention on the ground. Thaci has created ideal conditions for Kosovo Serbs to barricade their position – including physical barricades – against Kosovo institutions. This became more than obvious now after the police declared the Kosovo Serb politician, Milan Radoicic, as a wanted person, who is widely seen as the real power holder in northern Kosovo, and is known for his close ties with the Kosovo Prime Minister Ramush Haradinaj, and even helped him to form the Government after Srpska List, controlled by Belgrade, decided to join Haradinaj’s Government. Declaring Radoicic as an outlaw means the end of the current coalition and in a way the end of Kosovo Government’s plan to counter Serbia economically.
If everything goes as planned, Thaci’s sinister plan is to reinstate his position as power-broker in the Kosovo political scene, because now his credibility is at stake. Confirmation that the entire plan of the Kosovo Police intervention in the north was staged comes from media close to the President of Kosovo. For instance, an article published by the online version of Klan Kosova, whose owners are under direct control of President Thaci, says that “Milan Radoicic has escaped from Kosovo after someone from Pristina informed him about the police action.” And at the end of the article it is mentioned that Haradinaj recently hosted Radoicic in his office. Haradinaj publicly admitted that he was in communication with Radoicic. But the allegation made by the media making the connection is more than obvious.
Media reported that Radoicic was in Belgrade on Thursday with other Kosovo Serb leaders in a meeting summoned by Serbia’s President Aleksandar Vucic. Kosovo authorities knew beforehand that he had not returned to Kosovo [after the meeting]. Things are expected to deteriorate because unlike Belgrade officials who are united over the Kosovo issue, Pristina officials are following a different course. The Kosovo President, who is supposed to work for the protection of state interests, seems to be closer to Serbia’s President’s stance rather than the stance of the Government of Kosovo.
