While President Vucic was preparing for his flight from Rome to Tirana and sending messages on the need to calm down the situation in the region, Kosovo President Hashim Thaci said from Tirana that “it is time to create an Albanian space without borders and to sensitize the rights of Presevo, Medvedja and Bujanovac to join Kosovo.” Thaci sent this message after today’s meeting with Albanian Prime Minister, Edi Rama in Tirana.

„I had a meeting with the Prime Minister of the Republic of Albania, Edi Rama, where we discussed, among other things, the necessity of fully opening the borders between Kosovo and Albania and the creation of an Albanian space without borders under the Euro-Atlantic umbrella. At this meeting, we raised the issue of the need to correct historical injustices by bringing together the Albanian factor in order to sensitize the rights of Presevo, Medvedja and Bujanovac to join the territory of the Republic of Kosovo,“ Thaci wrote on his Facebook profile.

„The elimination of unnecessary barriers to the economy and business on both sides of the border“ was agreed by the Kosovo and Albania governments at the fifth regular session celebrating the anniversary of Albanian independence on November 28th of last year.

As the Kosovo media reported, the deadline for the implementation of this agreement expired at the beginning of April because of „Albania’s obligations to the EU.“

Self-determination deputy, Glauk Konjufca confirmed these allegations for KTV. Konjufca said that he had the opportunity to speak with international representatives in Brussels and Pristina who said that the elimination of the borders is a major problem.

„European Union officials argue that such a process will set back Albania’s candidate status for full integration into the European Union, as well as the phase in which Kosovo is currently,“ Konjufca told KTV.

Serbian officials have also been warning of the threat of “the creation of a Greater Albania.” According to them, Greater Albania will be created if ethnic delimitation between the Serb and Albanian people does not happen, that is, they are in favor of delimitation from Greater Albania.

What Pristina sees as the border between Kosovo and Albania, Serbia regards as the state border of the Republic of Serbia and the Republic of Albania. Although both sides failed to publicly explain what this ethnic or „historical“ – as it was originally called in Belgrade – and now a „compromise“ and „peaceful“ partition with Albanians implies, a perception was created in the public that such a delimitation line would be in Kosovo. Where this line would lead is also unknown, but in this case, both Serbs and Albanians will again be together behind each side. Nevertheless, Hashim Thaci reiterated that he is committed to joining Presevo, Bujanovac and Medvedja to Kosovo, while the Serbian Foreign Minister, Ivica Dacic recently confirmed that the delimitation line would follow the Ibar River.

Kosovo President, Hashim Thaci is currently attending the Brdo-Brioni Summit in Tirana along with other European leaders, including the Serbian President, Aleksandar Vucic. According to announcements, both Thaci and Vucic will meet with the High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Federica Mogherini in Tirana today.
