Scott ‘clarifies’: U.S. policy on Kosovo is not something new

Kyle Scott

While state officials in Belgrade are busy criticizing U.S. Ambassador Kyle Scott’s statement about Kosovo from two days ago – which he verbalized in front of certain government officials in the premises of the Serbian government, the Ambassador reacted once again – this time on Twitter.

“The focus should remain on finding a comprehensive solution and both sides have our full support in that. I am aware that this is a sensitive subject but U.S. policy on Kosovo is not something new,” Scott tweeted in Serbian.

When asked by journalists on Monday how much hope is there for peace when there is constant pressure on Serbia to talk with the so-called Kosovo government while half of the people who sit there have criminal records or are about to face prosecution, he initially replied:

„The Kosovo government is not so-called – it is the Government of Kosovo, an independent and sovereign country, with its elected representatives.“

The Serbian Minister of Defense, Aleksandar Vulin was the first one to react.

„I am sorry that Ambassador Scott has not tried to show his arrogance at some event with President Vucic, because he would be thrown out on his ear from the Government, but Serbia could at least see who is fighting for Serbia, and who is only thinking about his lower back,“ Vulin said going on even further by insulting:

“For such type of arrogance people say – the more the pumpkin bean is empty, the more impudent you are,” he added.

The Minister (Vulin) reacted adequately, the Ambassador’s statement is scandalous, the Serbian Prime Minister Ana Brnabic saw nothing wrong in the Minister’s statement, but did in the U.S. diplomat’s one.

„This statement by Ambassador Scott is scandalous, unbelievable. I think that it is inappropriate, not only in diplomacy, but rather unsuitable for one’s respect for his hosts, and especially because it was spoken in the building of the Government of the Republic of Serbia. You should not give such a statement, if only due to basic manners and respect for the host,” Brnabic said.

„Whatever that Kosovo Government means to you, for us – it is the so-called Government of Kosovo, “the Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic told media and also clarified what has been already viewed in public as a diplomatic incident between the Serbian Government and U.S. Embassy.

“The representative of the government should have reacted, and if not in any other way, but to tell him: ‘Ambassador, you are not here to correct the press, but to answer the questions’,” this is what the Serbian President viewed saying he was sorry not to be there.

He would still not „throw Scott out on his ear“ – as the Minister of Defense argued.

„No one was ever thrown out, we’re good hosts, no one is thrown out on his ear here, but whether Kyle Scott would receive a proper response, decent, moderate, serious and responsible – he would definitely get it. A response that would mean the protection of the interests of the state of Serbia, just as he protects US interests, and I would try to be polite and respect the United States,“ said Vucic.

„Ambassador, you are not here to correct the press, but to answer the questions“
