A panel discussion on the future of the „University of Pristina with temporary seat in Kosovska Mitrovica“ was held in Kragujevac, where participants warned about increasing pressures on the institution and called for broader social support.
Speaking at the event, student Mihailo Arsić said there is a “moral obligation not to remain silent” about what he described as the gradual shutdown of the university and the ongoing outflow of Serbs from Kosovo.
Participants stressed that the university is not only an educational institution, but also a key pillar for the survival of the Serbian community and its institutional presence in Kosovo. Concerns were raised over what was described as a process of “quiet integration” of the university into the Kosovo education system, alongside a lack of clear response from Serbian institutions.
Assistant professor Aleksandar Kostadinović noted that faculty members are facing uncertainty, particularly regarding residency and work permits, while institutions in Belgrade have not provided clear answers about the university’s legal status.
Professor Milo Lompar described the university as a “key covenant” and emphasized that its preservation, along with the healthcare system in Kosovo, should be a priority for both society and individuals. He also warned of broader political and cultural implications, arguing that changes related to Kosovo affect the collective identity of the Serbian people.
During the panel, a student proclamation was also read, stating that “Kosovo and Metohija are an inalienable and integral part of the Republic of Serbia,” describing it as both a historical and moral imperative. The proclamation further emphasized that Kosovo is “not just a territory, but a key component of national identity,” and that its preservation goes beyond political considerations.
Students also highlighted that resolving the Kosovo issue requires engagement within broader international frameworks, while ensuring peace, security, and protection of rights for all communities.
The event aimed to raise awareness among the public in Serbia about the challenges facing the university, with organizers noting that the issue has not received sufficient attention.
