The Mitrovdan Memorial was marked this Saturday, and photographs of demolished gravestones from Christian cemeteries in Kosovo flooded social media. The Abbot of Visoki Decani monastery, Sava Janjic, also published a series of pictures of demolished monuments from the Orahovac cemetery, followed by a lengthy story written by a Serbian language teacher in the Orahovac grammar school, Olivera Radic.
She noted her experience from Saturday. A 30 member group of Serbian visitors found desecrated monuments in the Orahovac christian cemetary – broken crosses and graves covered with manure, dead dogs, cats, and chickens. However, Radic emphasized, this no longer comes as a surprise.
There were a few visitors that were children with their families. Radic recalled her childhood visits to the cemetery and stressed that it is important for children to visit the graveyards of their loved ones in order to learn „important lessons“ – about their ancestors and their own origin, and another about the “(un)humans” who are destroying their graves.
“Why are they doing this? Why are the monuments bothering them?” eleven-year-old Atanasije wondered, staring at his uncle’s desecrated tombstone, witnessed Radic.
She listed the names of around twenty families whose members were buried in this cemetery.
