North Mitrovica and Zvecan municipalities „under quarantine“

The Kosovska Mitrovica and Zvecan emergency teams, as proposed by epidemiologists, health institutions, the Institute of Public Health, the Ministry of Health, and taking into account the new confirmed cases of COVID-19, placed these municipalities „under quarantine“. The decision came into force at 6 pm and these municipalities will be quarantined “until further notice.”

This latest measure means that no citizen can enter or leave these municipalities, except due to health reasons, the supply of food and other necessities. Public administration employees, engaged in activities aimed at combating the pandemic, as well as those involved in the production and retail sector, are exempt from this measure.

The head of the provisional Serbian-sponsored authority in Kosovska Mitrovica, Aleksandar Spiric and the mayor of North Mitrovica, Goran Rakic, along with North Mitrovica Hospital Center deputy director, Zlatan Elek, virologist Danica Radomirovic and epidemiologist Aleksandar Antonijevic announced today.

“The management and administrative staff of health, safety and municipal administration sectors, the emergency team, are exempt from this measure. As are those involved in supplying the citizens and institutions with basic supplies,” Goran Rakic said.

He reiterated that all gatherings are prohibited, except for those aimed at combating the outbreak (during which a 2-meter distance must be respected), adding that in the case of funerals, „only close relatives of the deceased and the person performing the funeral may attend.“

Rakic warned that other measures would be taken in the future, depending on the situation.

So far, 17 people in northern Kosovo have tested positive for COVID-19 – 11 from North Mitrovica, four from Zvecan and two from Leposavic, including a person who passed away two days ago.

Earlier today, Kosovska Mitrovica emergency team announced that they secured a triage site within the North Mitrovica Health Center, where sampling is being carried out and that they were working to assist medical personnel in the delivery and provision of medical equipment.

The central emergency team in Belgrade said it expects patients in a stable condition to be placed in student dormitories – at the proposal of Belgrade epidemiologists who have observed the situation in the field, Aleksandar Spiric said.

A team of virology professors and epidemiologists from Belgrade paid a visit to North Mitrovica yesterday. In the upcoming days, they will assist North Mitrovica Hospital Center in organizing activities to combat the spread of coronavirus.
