„Hands off our University, because it is not meant to be snatched away, but for knowledge to be acquired in it,“ the head of the Kosovo Office, Marko Djuric told „the provisional Pristina institutions“, following an article published by KoSSev on the draft Kosovo Law on Higher Education, which envisaged that the University of North Mitrovica would become a Kosovo institution of higher education.
„Pristina University with temporary headquarters in North Mitrovica was and will be part of the Serbian education system,“ Djuric wrote in a statement.
The statement also added that the University of Pristina with temporary headquarters in North Mitrovica is part of the European University Association and that, with approximately 8,000 active students, represents the pillar of the survival of Serbs in Kosovo, that it „was established as a branch of the Belgrade University“ and is the only higher education institution in Kosovo where classes are held in the Serbian language.
Djuric shared his belief that the attack on the current status of the University „is actually an attack on the elementary rights of the Serbian people,“ adding that this is „an act of aggressive willfulness with the sole purpose of hindering the survival of our people in Kosovo“.
„Pristina, being aware of the amount of persistence and love the Serbian students and professors have for protecting their country and fighting for it, is obviously bothered by it,“ he said.
The head of the Kosovo Office concluded that Kosovo Serbs „will never surrender their university“ and that „they will never give up the right to study in their own language“ within the educational system of Serbia.
