The session of the North Mitrovica Municipal Assembly started today with a short discussion on the issue of opening the main bridge on the Ibar. „We are in favor of opening the bridge,“ underlined the chairman of this body, Nedžad Ugljanin, however, stressing that the MA made the decision on this matter a year ago, that is, that they forwarded the request to the central institutions.

A session of the Municipal Assembly is being held in North Mitrovica today. The six-point agenda was announced last week.

However, after the deputy commander of the KP of the region north, Veton Elshani, announced that the main bridge on the Ibar will „open soon“, and that they are considering how to do it, the chairman of the MA, Nedžad Ugljanin, announced last night that there is the possibility that one of the councilors will raise this issue at today’s session.

Before the beginning of the session, Ugljanin underlined for KoSSev that the opening of the bridge was not on the agenda. He even expressed the expectation that this topic would not be discussed today.

However, at the very beginning of the session, and MA member from the Self-Determination Movement raised this issue, stating that the citizens were thrilled over the announcement of the KP on the opening of the bridge.

Ugljanin went on to say „we will support whatever concerns the bridge“.

We don’t need the bridge as a symbol, but as a link between communities

„We will support every opening of free movement for traffic and vehicles as an assembly and we will stand with the citizens, the communities. It is part of human rights,“ said Ugljanin.

Ugljanin also underlined that „all matters concerning the bridge are a done deal“.

The decision to open the bridge was made in the North Mitrovica Municipal Assembly in April last year, just a few days after four Albanian mayors came to power in four municipalities in the north of Kosovo, after the elections boycotted by the local Serbs.

After the adoption of the decision, it was forwarded to the Kosovo Ministries of Administration and Local Self-Government and the Ministry of Internal Affairs „for further decision-making“, while at the same time messages were coming from the West that the bridge on the Ibar should be discussed within the Dialogue.

“The media kicked out, session then closed for the public“

The session then proceeded with a discussion on the adoption of the minutes from the previous session, after which Valentina Djerković, a member of the Serbian Democracy, addressed the chairman and asked what the minutes were and what was being voted for.

Ugljanin then emphasized that the audience had no right to ask questions during the session, after which Djerković insisted on obtaining an answer to her question, saying that citizens have the right to know what the MA decides on.

Ugljanin then said that the session should be closed to the public, i.e. that only the members of the North Mitrovica Municipal Assembly should remain, while observes, including media representatives, to leave the room. Ugljanin’s suggestion was met with the opposition of the present media crews.

After that, there was a break, where some councillors, together with the chairman, went for consultations.

After the end of the break, there was a vote on this issue, and the chairman, without a clear explanation of how many councillors voted and how, maintained that the proposal was adopted to close the session to the public and that citizens and media representatives must leave the hall.

Dušan Milunović, an ethnic Serb councilor, publicly objected to this, stating that even he would leave the session if the media stepped out.

Nedžad Ugljanin then told the media that after the end of the session, he would explain why such a decision was made, after which the municipal security demanded that the media leave the hall.

Out of revolt, a small group of media teams decided not to wait for the end of the session, while the majority stayed in front of the municipal building, waiting for Ugljanin to give them an explanation.
