Kosovo Government has approved, during Tuesday’s meeting, the statute of the shareholding company of „Trepca“ after almost two years. This huge mining complex was put under the government’s control in a bid to save it from bankruptcy, Gazeta Express reported.
The Parliament of Kosovo voted in 2016 to put the mining complex under the Government’s control by transforming it from a socially owned enterprise into a shareholding company. Kosovo, thus, got an 80 percent stake and miners 20 percent.
But almost two years after adoption of the Law the Government took no other action to revive the former Yugoslav metallurgic giant. This is the first move of Ramush Haradinaj’s Government to revive the mining complex of Trepca, which is rich in lead, zinc and silver.
Trepca’s ownership structure has been disputed by local Serbs and Belgrade, who claim 75 per cent of Trepca belongs to Serbia. After the adoption of the Law by the Parliament of Kosovo, local Serbs have protested asking the Kosovo Government to give up its plans to put Trepca under its control.
