The Assistant Director of the Kosovo Office, Petar Petkovic, and the head of the Provisional Authority of the Municipality of Leposavic, Zoran Todic handed over the keys to the future tenants of 58 apartments located in three residential buildings in Dositej Obradovic Street in Leposavic. This project, as well as the previous construction of housing projects in the north, had not gone unnoticed in Pristina. This time, the allegations of the „colonization“ of the north were presented by a high-ranking LVV official and former president of the Kosovo Assembly, Glauk Konjufca.

According to Konjufca, presenting the keys to 58 apartments to Serbian families on the International Day of the Missing is proof that Serbia „does not show regret and remorse for the genocide committed in Kosovo.“

„On the contrary, it not only conceals the truth about the kidnapped but continues with the colonization in plain sight of the Kosovo government,“ he wrote on Facebook.

He proceeded to describe the elements of “typical colonization”.

„Vucic’s government built 58 closely spaced housing units in one settlement located in the strategically most important part of the north – where they had never been present before.“

Although Konjufca failed to specify where the residential buildings were built, apart from stressing that they are in the „strategically most important part of the north,“ the Kosovo media, while writing about his reaction, falsely reported that the apartments were built in North Mitrovica.

Previously, the settlement „Sun Valley“ in Zvecan, but also projects for the construction of residential buildings in North Mitrovica stirred similar reactions.

PDK MP Enver Hoxhaj also described the project in Zvecan – envisaged to house 1,500 returnee families – as „colonization“, while his party colleague Valdete Idrizi, also an MP, expressed concern over the construction of „collective accommodation“ housing in the North, alleging that thus „quiet ethnic cleansing is being carried out“.

The President of the Assembly of Kosovo, Vjosa Osmani also expressed concerns about the construction of housing units in the north, announcing a report of the Commission that visited „this part of Kosovo to understand how to process the issue in the Assembly.“

Furthermore, Konjufca blamed the Kosovo government for opening the issue of internally displaced persons in Brussels, stating that the topic also included the issue of „the return of Serbs who left Kosovo since 1976.“

„As soon as such a topic is accepted, the thesis of the Serbian Academy that the Albanians exerted pressure and carried out apartheid over Kosovo Serbs is automatically legitimized. With such chauvinistic constructs, Serbia is trying to cover up the genocides it committed against Albanians.“

He also criticized the lack of reaction of the Kosovo government, claiming that its leadership will find out about the construction of these housing units from the media. He added that their reaction will be as important as the reaction of some NGOs.

According to the data of the Kosovo Ministry of Communities and Returns, headed by Dalibor Jevtic, there were 226,418 refugees and displaced persons from Kosovo in 1999. Most of those displaced persons are in Serbia (187,129), Montenegro (30,289), and Macedonia (9,000). The number of IDPs is 25,000 while 20,000 persons expressed an interest in returning.

The Prime Minister of Kosovo, Avdullah Hoti had previously addressed this issue, stating that he will not allow the implementation of projects in the north financed by the Republic of Serbia, which are not in accordance with Kosovo laws.

The acting Mayor of North Mitrovica, Aleksandar Spiric, however, confirmed for KoSSev that facilities under construction in northern Kosovo have the necessary building permits.

As the Kosovo Office announced, the apartments distributed in Leposavic yesterday have an average floor surface of 60 m2 and are intended for young married couples, large and socially endangered families.
