Shortly before 6:00 p.m. tonight an incident occured among children at the playground in Mikro naselje settlement in North Mitrovica, when a 14-year-old reportedly threatened other children with knives. While Serbian sources state that an ethnic Albanian attacked Serbian children, the Kosovo police, without specifying the ethnicity, denied that the minor attacked other children, claiming that he actually just showed them knives, after which the children got scared and ran away home.
„Approximately at 5:50 p.m. today, in Mikronaselje settlement in North Mitrovica, children of N.O. were attacked playing on the playground. A person of Albanian ethnicity took out two knives and attacked the Serb children, all while yelling out menacing threats. The children managed to escape to a nearby building,“ the head of the Kosovo Office, Petar Petkovic, announced.
Along with the expected accusations against the Kosovo Prime Minister, Petkovic added that it is „16th attack on Serbian children“ since he took office.
The deputy commander of the Kosovo Police for the region north, Veton Elshani, alleged that there was no attack, and that the police reacted immediately. He also explained what precisely happened tonight.
„Tonight around 17:50, we were contacted by the father of one of the children from the Mikro naselje settlement, saying that his child was scared by another child who brought knives onto the playground. A 14-year-old boy, who was in a group of children, showed knives to another group of children. The children got scared and ran to their parents, after which one of them called us,“ Elshani said in a statement for KoSSev.
He added that Kosovo Police units immediately went to the scene.
„We brought the boy who carried the knives to the police station accompanied by his parents and a lawyer, interrogated him in their presence, confiscated the knives and filed the case as illegal possession of weapons,“ Elshani underlined, noting that the prosecutor has been notified about the case, which will go through a regular court procedure.
The Mikro naselje settlement is a multi-ethnic community in North Mitrovica, where the favorite gathering place for both children and parents alike is the playground located near the Kukavica monument, or Partizan hill.
