University professor, political scientist, and one of the most prominent Kosovar intellectuals, Behlul Beqaj, passed away today, his daughter Adea Beqaj announced this morning.
Behlul Beqaj was also a KoSSev portal columnist. Endeavoring to discover a new way to communicate, and place the dialogue on a healthy, transparent and honest foundation, he led the dialogue „Pristinska’s veza“ for four years together with the journalist Milivoje Mihajlovic.
He participated in talks and round tables organized by KoSSev over the years, joining the editor of our portal at numerous conferences, forums and shows in Pristina, Mitrovica, Gracanica and Belgrade.
The things he said at public events, he would repeat in private – he truly advocated for dialogue and coexistence and ultimately believed in it as the only way out of the Balkan troubles. Willing to listen to the other side’s story, he was proud of his own people and respected others, he rejoiced over joint life, but was saddened by hatred, misunderstanding and lack of education. Beqaj could not tolerate the corruption of bad leaders.
In his last column, he asked his former fellow citizen and friend, who moved to Belgrade after the war, whether “a middle ground can be found between two extreme options for the Association of Serb-majority Municipalities,” while also extending an invitation.
„Dear friend, I invite you (to the extent that it is contingent on us) to make a joint contribution to debunking the populist pretensions of the authorities in Serbia and Kosovo, which have also come to the fore regarding the issue of the Association of Serb-majority Municipalities (ASM) and which, whether coming from Belgrade or Pristina, are causing the greatest harm to the Serbian community in Kosovo and its relations with the Albanian majority,“ Beqaj wrote on August 19th, in the midst of latest tensions between Pristina and Belgrade.
He led his life courageously, without yielding to the opinion of majority’s when he did not share it, abandoning his advisory functions once he realized that the leaders he advised caused harm to the people they represented.
Beqaj was buried today at the Pristina city cemetery at 1 pm.
Behlul Beqaj was born in Prizren in 1957, where he attended primary and secondary school. He graduated from the Faculty of Political Sciences of the University of Belgrade, and received his master’s degree from the Faculty of Law of the University of Pristina. Behlul earned his doctorate degree in political science at the University of Cyril and Methodius in Macedonia. He is the author of hundreds of public and scientific works.
The KoSSev portal sends its deepest condolences to the Beqaj family.
