A „UÇK“ sign, which was recently placed on the Crnusa hill in South Mitrovica, was “inaugurated” on Saturday.
The opening ceremony was held on the same day Kosovo Albanians celebrate „KLA Fighters’ Day“.
This event was attended by the mayor of South Mitrovica, Bedri Hamza, other municipal officials, representatives of former KLA fighters and family members of the deceased, representatives of the KSF, and Kosovo Police.
Hamza declared that he is grateful to everyone who „contributed to Kosovo’s freedom“, alleging that the installation of the sign is a „significant project“.
„The Kosovo Liberation Army remains the most important political and military project for the freedom and independence of Kosovo,“ he added.
The municipality of South Mitrovica stated that the ceremony was organized in memory of former KLA fighters and „their dedication and contribution to the freedom and independence of the people of Kosovo.“
„The obelisk with the letters KLA will serve as a permanent symbol of the memory of the struggle and efforts for freedom and justice,“ they said.
An “UÇK“ sign was installed on the Crnusa hill above Mitrovica recently. When exactly the sign was placed there remains unknown.
Residents noticed these three bright red letters almost two weeks ago.
The hill on which the sign was installed is part of the municipality of South Mitrovica, mostly inhabited by ethnic Albanians, but it is also clearly visible from the northern part of the town.
The idea to place this sign on the hill above Mitrovica was put forward in April of this year by municipal authorities in South Mitrovica.
As announced at the time, the plan was to erect the letters „UÇK,“ which would be illuminated and held on metal beams.
The director of the cadastre in South Mitrovica, Artan Berisha, said in April that the field has been designated for „three golden letters of the KLA“ which will „pay tribute to the liberation army’s holy war”.
Two years ago, the municipality of South Mitrovica announced the allocation of 191 hectares of land in Crnusa for the construction of the base of the Kosovo Security Forces (KSF).
There is a practice range on this hill, where at the beginning of this year KSF had a shooting exercise.
