„The unification of Mitrovica will happen regardless of the obstacles, there is no other way“ – a new announcement by the Mayor of South Mitrovica, Agim Bahtiri arrived in the midst of month-long tensions between Belgrade and Pristina.
Bahtiri requested that the government take concrete action to change the law that would allow Mitrovica to become one municipality.
„Certain political circles oppose this initiative, but they do not oppose the moves of the Kosovo Serb mayors from the north for partition. How is it possible that I do not have the right to work on the unification of a city that has always been one, while some of my Serbian colleagues have the right to demand the partition of Kosovo?“ Bahtiri posted on his Facebook page.
He further claimed that the unification will „happen in the near future“.
The Assembly of South Mitrovica municipality adopted Bahtiri’s initiative to unite Mitrovica a few days ago, following resignations of the Kosovo mayors from the north, and the former North Mitrovica Mayor, Goran Rakic’s announcement that municipal administrations in the Kosovo system ceased to exist in the North.
Prime Minister Haradinaj replied that this is decided at the central level. This request has arrived at the Ministry of Administration and Local Government and this ministry will declare its legality, according to the legal deadline – within 15 days.
