The Kosovo Office just announced that it had delivered guarantees from the Government of the Republic of Serbia to the EULEX mission in Kosovo, requesting that the ethnic Serbs currently in custody – Miljan Adzic and Sladjan Trajkovic, to be released on their own recognizance until the end of the proceedings.
The Serbian government has given state guarantees that Adzic and Trajkovic will be available to the EULEX mission for the duration of the proceedings led against them if they are released on their own recognizance from judicial custody in Podujevo, the Kosovo Office specified.
„The Kosovo Office will notify other international missions operating in the territory of the province about these state guarantees,“ this body said.
Miljan Adzic was arrested on December 9th, 2022 at the Jarinje border crossing, under the charges of „complicity in an attack on an official“ and „unlawful possession and control of weapons“.
As the Kosovo Police announced at the time, Adzic is also suspected of the criminal offense of „aggravated attempted murder,“ that is, of being involved in an armed attack on officials.
The day after his arrest, Adzic was remanded into custody for a month. On January 5th, his internment was extended by a further two months.
Sladjan Trajkovic was arrested six days after Adzic. The Pristina authorities charged Trajkovic with an alleged war crime from 1999. Trajkovic is a former member of the Kosovo Police, who resigned in November of last year.
He was also given a one-month detention, which was extended by two more months in January.
Both Trajkovic and Adzic are currently in the detention center in Podujevo.
Adzic’s and Trajkovic’s release was one of the demands presented by the Kosovo Serbs for the removal of the 20-day barricades erected in December in the north of Kosovo.
Although Adzic and Trajkovic remained in custody, the barricades were still removed a day after Dejan Pantic, the third Serb arrested in that period, was transferred from court custody to house arrest.
