Thaci signed a decree for the adoption of the Kosovo-Montenegro demarcation agreement

Kosovo President Hashim Thaci today signed a decree for the adoption of the Law on the Ratification of the Kosovo-Montenegro demarcation agreement. The decree came into force after the signing, the Kosovo presidency announced.

The signing took place after the Constitutional Court of Kosovo assessed that this law is in accordance with the Kosovo Constitution. Its assessment had been previously requested by Vetevendosje's members while opposing its adoption.

The agreement on the demarcation of Kosovo and Montenegro was reached in August 2015. However, it was not ratified until March 21st 2018, as the Kosovo opposition had opposed it, claiming that "8,000 hectares of Kosovo's land would be thus taken".

During several attempts by the parliament to ratify the agreement, protests took place inside and outside of the Parliament building with the usage of tear gas and violence. The ratification was one of the two criteria for Kosovo to obtain visa liberalization with the EU. Another criteria is to further the fight against organized crime and corruption.
