Blerim Shala, political advisor to Kosovo President, Hashim Thaci, talking on the final agreement between Kosovo and Serbia said that it is worth discussing with Serbia the swapping of Presevo Valley, inhabited mainly by Albanians, with the north of Kosovo, inhabited by Serbs.
Shala in an interview with T7 reminded that earlier President Thaci considered a land swap with Serbia as “very dangerous,” noting that things have changed over the last weeks, including a change of stance by the US related to an exchange of territories between Kosovo and Serbia. “The US stance has changed,” Shala said. “There are demands for Kosovo and Serbia to reach an agreement, to try at least,” he said. But Shala said that border issues were never addressed explicitly during the Kosovo-Serbia dialogue in Brussels facilitated by the EU.
Shala said that regarding reaching a potential final agreement with Serbia internationals advised Kosovo leaders to ask Serbia to officially recognise Kosovo. He said that even after a final agreement Kosovo and Serbia should solve many important issues, such as the pension fund of Kosovo, and the demarcation of the border between the two countries.
Shala also commented the idea of political representatives of Presevo Valley, who called on Kosovo MPs to adopt a resolution asking for unification of the Valley with Kosovo. Shala said that such an initiative is not in violation of the Constitution, as alleged by opposition parties in Kosovo.
