KFOR mission completed the removal of several vehicles blocking roads in northern Kosovo, NATO confirmed today, after heavy machinery was removed this afternoon in Zaze in the municipality of Zvecan, only two days after torched trucks were dismantled near Dudin Krs.
“The NATO-led KFOR mission completed the removal of several vehicles blocking roads in northern Kosovo, through the deployment of engineer units to the areas of Duda’s Rock and Srbovac arterial route,” NATO announced.
According to them, this effort was carried out in accordance with KFOR’s UN mandate – based on the United Nations Security Council Resolution 1244 of 1999 – to ensure a safe and secure environment and freedom of movement for the benefit of all communities living in Kosovo.
They specified that the effort follows the decision taken on 28 December 2022 after Serbs, as confirmed by the Serbian President, agreed to remove barricades set up in northern Kosovo.
“The removal of barricades followed intensive efforts by NATO Allies and the European Union to defuse tensions, with key support from KFOR and the EU-led Rule of Law mission (EULEX),” they underlined.
The dismantling of the final roadblocks was conducted in a quick, safe and secure way, to avoid incidents and other risks for local security – NATO added.
They said that KFOR remains extremely vigilant and has the capability and personnel to continue implementing its mandate. NATO also stated that they support the dialogue led in Brussels.
“NATO also continues to support the EU-facilitated dialogue between Belgrade and Pristina, as the main platform to find a solution that respects the rights of all communities and to build lasting peace and security across the region.”
The Serbs from the north of Kosovo set up the first barricades on December 10th in as many as 14 different locations.
They started dismantling the barricades last Thursday, that is, exactly 20 days after they were installed.
On the other hand, the barricade near the Dudin Krs site, which consisted of two trucks that were set on fire earlier, was not removed.
These trucks were dismantled two days ago by KFOR.
While the general public believed that the last barricade had been removed, the Kosovo Police announced this morning that KFOR will start removing „heavy machinery“ from the road in Zaze in the Zvecan municipality.
As our reporter reported from the field, this barricade – consisting of a truck, was located near the Gerontology Center near Srbovac, that is, on a side road, 60 meters from the Pristina-Raska main road.
