The Kosovo Police Inspectorate (KPI) has recommended the suspension of two police officers from the North Mitrovica Regional Police Directorate in connection with an incident on October 26 involving a local resident, Miloš Subotić. The announcement comes amid rising concerns about alleged police misconduct in the region.
According to a statement from KPI, the recommended suspension is intended to support an ongoing investigation into accusations that the officers may have been involved in mistreating a civilian. The recommendation calls for the suspension of both a police officer and a sergeant.
„Referring to allegations of mistreatment by police in North Mitrovica related to the incident in ‘Knez Lazar’ square on October 26, 2024, KPI investigators today recommended the suspension of two police officers (a sergeant and a police officer) employed in the North Mitrovica Regional Police Directorate,“ KPI’s statement read.
KPI also emphasized its commitment to a thorough investigation, aimed at clarifying all aspects of the case.
The controversy began when Subotić, a resident of North Mitrovica, was detained near the main Ibar bridge in the early hours of October 26. According to Subotić, he was attempting to pass through an area near a newly opened store when he moved some bags obstructing the public walkway.
After his release, Subotić claimed he was taken to a room without cameras and allegedly assaulted by officers whose badge numbers were reportedly covered. He was later fined and released.
In contrast, Kosovo Police denied Subotić’s allegations, asserting that he had committed acts of vandalism, verbally assaulted officers, and refused to comply with their commands.
Nevertheless, KPI launched an investigation in response to possible abuse of authority by the police involved in the incident.
The case has sparked widespread reactions, particularly from Serbian communities and local leaders.
Notably, five leading civil society organizations from North Kosovo announced a suspension of cooperation with the European Union Rule of Law Mission (EULEX), condemning what they called the “unlawful detention and beating” of Subotić.
The Deputy Ombudsman of Kosovo also expressed concern, echoing calls for accountability.
