In a ceremonial change of command today, Italian Army Major General Enrico Barduani officially assumed leadership of the NATO-led peacekeeping mission in Kosovo (KFOR) at the mission’s headquarters in Pristina. Barduani takes over from Turkish General Özkan Ulutaş, who led the mission for the past year.
Held at KFOR’s „Film City“ camp, the event saw the participation of high-ranking officials from Kosovo, as well as international diplomats and representatives of foreign organizations.
Barduani, the 29th commander of the NATO mission, is the 14th Italian general to lead the operation. Italy has consistently played a significant role in KFOR, currently contributing the largest national contingent with 1,065 soldiers.
In his farewell speech, General Ulutaş acknowledged the fragility of the situation in Kosovo but expressed optimism about the region’s future.
„In my first months, I witnessed a commitment from people to overcome a history of conflict. Despite their differences, all communities in Kosovo share a vision of a peaceful, secure, and progressive country,“ he said, as reported by Kallxo.
Taking over command, Barduani emphasized KFOR’s ongoing dedication to maintaining peace and security for all communities in Kosovo.
„We will continue to contribute to a safe and secure environment for everyone living in Kosovo,“ he stated.
Barduani also highlighted KFOR’s role in supporting the EU-mediated dialogue between Belgrade and Pristina, calling it the key framework for resolving outstanding issues. „This is essential for lasting stability, and we will support the normalization of relations in a way that respects the rights of all communities,“ Barduani added, according to Kim.
He further emphasized KFOR’s commitment to ensuring a peaceful Kosovo, noting that the mission will remain aligned with UN Security Council Resolution 1244, which has guided KFOR’s presence since 1999.
As Barduani takes command, Italy’s military presence continues to play a pivotal role in Kosovo’s peacekeeping efforts, reinforcing the country’s long-standing commitment to the region’s stability.
