Kosovo Police have discovered a hidden, unauthorized surveillance camera mounted on a wooden utility pole along the main road Mitrovica – Raška, near Leposavic. The device, which was actively recording, was found yesterday and subsequently removed, authorities confirmed.
„We found it yesterday, concealed and camouflaged. It was monitoring the street. We’ve taken it down,“ said Veton Elshani, deputy commander for the northern region, in a brief statement to KoSSev.
Elshani confirmed that the camera had been recording the main road near Leposavic. No arrests have been made in connection with the discovery, and a case has been opened under the category of „unauthorized recording.“
Broader Context of Camera Removals
Kosovo police have previously removed surveillance cameras in Serb-populated areas both south and north of the Ibar, with the explanation that the cameras were used by Serbian authorities for surveillance purposes.
Similar removals have occurred in locations such as Gnjilane, Partes, Ranilug, Klokot, and Strpce. Last summer, police also found concealed cameras in at least two locations in North Mitrovica, including on air conditioning units on high-rise buildings.
Kosovo police then begun installing their own surveillance systems in the region, citing security concerns. Last year, authorities confirmed the installation of approximately 200 security cameras across four municipalities in northern Kosovo.
