Albanian Prime Minister Edi Rama last night called on citizens — from Albania, Kosovo, North Macedonia, and the diaspora — to join a protest that, according to local media, will be held this Friday in Tirana.
As Rama announced, the protest is scheduled to begin at 5 p.m.
“With pleasure and honour, I make this call. FREEDOM HAS A NAME. From Kosovo, North Macedonia, Albania, the diaspora, and every corner of Albanian lands — thousands of hearts will unite this Friday, October 17, at 17:00, to unanimously demand JUSTICE FOR THE LIBERATORS,” the Albanian prime minister wrote.
The rally represents a continuation of protests in support of former KLA leaders, organized by the Kosovo Association of KLA Veterans.
The Association has chosen Tirana as the next location for a mass gathering, following a previous demonstration held near the headquarters of the Specialist Chambers in The Hague — where the former leaders of the “Kosovo Liberation Army” are being tried.
According to reports from that earlier event, thousands of Albanians took part.
Protesters have been calling for the release and what they describe as a fair trial for former KLA leaders — Hashim Thaçi, Kadri Veseli, Jakup Krasniqi, and Rexhep Selimi — who are facing charges of war crimes and crimes against humanity before the Kosovo Specialist Chambers in The Hague.
