German Bundestag member Josip Juratović has described Kosovo Prime Minister Albin Kurti and Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić as „ideal partners“ regarding the Kosovo issue. In an interview with Nova S, Juratović criticized Kurti for breaking his promises and accused Vučić of betting everything on economic growth at the expense of a functioning legal system—a gamble he believes will ultimately cost the Serbian people dearly.
Disappointment in Kurti
Juratović expressed his initial support for Kurti due to promises of democratization and a break from the „war coalition“ that previously governed Kosovo. However, his view has since changed.
„In the second term, I did not support Kurti because he failed to deliver on his promises,“ Juratović said.
He went on to argue that Kurti and Vučić, despite their opposing positions, seem to complement each other politically.
„Kurti and Vučić are, in my opinion, perfect partners on the Kosovo issue. They need each other. Perhaps this sounds harsh, but just look at their actions and reactions—they serve both sides. Both are negotiating with crossed fingers,“ he explained.
Vučić’s Theatrics and the Cost to Citizens
Juratović noted that Vučić handles the situation with a degree of theatrical skill but warned that the consequences fall squarely on ordinary citizens.
„The greatest victims are the Serbs, not only in the north of Kosovo but throughout the region, along with other minorities. The problem is that neither side plays fair—they are so deeply entrenched in the Kosovo-Serbia issue that they cannot find a way out,“ he said.
The Role of the International Community
To resolve the ongoing tensions, Juratović emphasized the need for international support to foster democracy in both Kosovo and Serbia.
„The international community must help establish democratic societies in Kosovo and Serbia. Only then will democrats be able to solve this issue,“ he asserted.
According to Juratović, a democratic framework is essential for rebuilding relations between Belgrade and Pristina. He dismissed the idea of Kosovo rejoining Serbia as impossible and called for cooperation instead.
„Every Serb understands that bringing Kosovo back within Serbia’s borders is not possible. Pristina must also understand that the north will never fully integrate under a shared national identity—but this isn’t necessary. What’s needed is collaboration,“ he added.
Criticism of Vučić’s Moves
Juratović labeled Vučić’s decision to withdraw Serbs from Kosovo’s institutions as one of his „biggest mistakes.“
„That decision played directly into Kurti’s hands,“ remarked the German MP, who has Croatian roots and ties to the former Yugoslav region.
Looking at Serbia’s political climate, Juratović said he no longer views the current regime as an enemy of democracy.
„I feel sorry for them because they know their end is near,“ he concluded.
