Days-long heavy rainfall caused floods throughout Kosovo. Several municipalities were affected, where flooding caused damage to numerous homes and buildings.
When it comes to North Mitrovica, the situation is critical in the Bosniak Mahala, where the Ibar River overflowed and reached the level of the eastern bridge in this settlement. Yards and houses were flooded, as well as the buildings situated near the riverbed.
Residents who were unable to leave their homes yesterday have been evacuated. Firefighters, municipal and other services, as well as volunteers rushed to their aid.
A total of 120 families were evacuated from 11 residential buildings. More than 30 people were housed in the student dorms. Late in the afternoon, the municipality called on citizens to help strengthen the embankment with sandbags.
The municipality has also opened a phone line available for all citizens who don’t have a place to stay (064 85 23 709).
In the municipality of Zubin Potok, the village of Jagnjenica has been the most affected. The stream running through this village reached the bridge level yesterday, and the foundations of nearby houses were also submerged.
At the same time, heavy rains caused a landslide in the municipality of Zubin Potok yesterday, blocking the roads to the area from the direction of South Mitrovica and Zvecan.
As a precaution, a spillway was opened on the Gazivoda Dam yesterday, one out of the four dam covers, and the water was discharged in a controlled manner.
The dam is safe, the director of the public enterprise „Ibar“ told KoSSev last night.
Residents of the municipality of Zvecan are also besieged with floods, where the water has reached some houses and garages in the settlement of Gvozdici, as well as in the village of Doljane. Parts of Banjska were also flooded, where the river bearing the same name overflowed and swept away a bridge. A similar situation befell the municipality of Leposavic, as well as the municipalities south of the Ibar.
Due to heavy rainfall in the Pec district, numerous streams and rivers overflowed. The water from the Kujavca River in the village of Osojane had reached buildings, houses, and arable land.
The heaviest rainfall, as announced by the Hydrometeorological Institute of Kosovo, was recorded in the north, west, and northwestern part of Kosovo. Heavy rains are also expected today.
The Kosovo police increased their vigilance, especially in flood-prone areas. The Kosovo government announced that the level of preparedness for a coordinated response was raised to deal with the developing situation.
