„I know that it (cf. the situation) was very concerning in the north of Kosovo. My message is that Kosovo must do everything to normalize life for all citizens,“ Tanja Fajon said in a statement for KoSSev from South Mitrovica today.

This marks the first time Fajon visited Kosovo in the capacity of Slovenian Foreign Minister and Deputy Prime Minister.

She told KoSSev that the reason why she came to visit is to study the current situation from the field.

„I’m happy that I had the opportunity to talk today to journalists and representatives of civil society in South Mitrovica, to hear from them where the grave danger lies three months before the local elections in the north of Kosovo,“ said Fajon.

The Slovenian FM revealed that she was informed about what happened in Kosovo in the past period. It was very concerning, she said, calling on both sides to build trust – primarily on the account of scared people.

„I hope that both Belgrade and Pristina will gain some trust and take further steps toward normalization and that there will be no further escalation. That is very important because people are afraid,“ Fajon pointed out, adding that this is something that the international community in Kosovo will also monitor.

Fajon says that today, during her first visit to Kosovo, she listened to everything that the interlocutors in Pristina and Mitrovica, had to say.

„So that we, as Slovenia, a friend of Kosovo, can assist in any situation – as long as there is no escalation and that people can live normally,“ Fajon told KoSSev.

Prior to visiting South Mitrovica, Fajon met with top Kosovo officials in Pristina – Kosovo President Vjosa Osmani, Prime Minister Albin Kurti, Speaker of the Assembly, Glauk Konjufca, and Minister of Foreign Affairs, Donika Gervalla.

She announced from Pristina that everyone is worried about the security risk in the Western Balkans, stressing that Kosovo should strive to normalize relations with Serbia.

„Negotiations should begin on the EU proposal on the full normalization of relations,“ she said at a joint press conference with Gervalla, the media report.

Fujon reiterated to Pristina officials that everything should be done to prevent escalation in the north, calling on them to build trust with Serbia and thus ensure a better life for all citizens.
