Displaced Serbs from Pec celebrated their town’s patron saint’s day – the Beheading of St. John the Precursor this week. In addition to the Abbot of the Visoki Decani Monastery and the Pec Patriarchate, the mayor of Pec, Gazmend Muhaxhiri also attended the celebration.

St. John’s Church in Pec, which was demolished during the 2004 ethnic violence and rebuilt in 2012, was originally built over thirty years ago.

There are no Serbs left in Pec today.

The mayor of Pec, Gazmend Muhaxhiri joined the displaced Serbs in celebrating the town’s patron saint’s day. Muhaxhiri also attended the liturgy.

Pec has been cooperating with Sabac through a partnership project for the past three years. For now, this is the only example of cooperation between Serbian and Kosovan municipalities. Through this partnership, Muhaxhiri and his colleague Nebojsa Zelenovic visited the Pec Patriarchate last year.

Abbot Sava Janjic addressed the believers gathered in Pec to celebrate the town’s patron saint’s day. He emphasized that it is very important that unity, love and understanding prevail among people.

„God has blessed this region beneath Prokletije, blessed and gave enough to everyone so that we could live in mutual respect and peace and thus thank the Lord for everything that is within us. To reconcile with one another, to forgive one another, not to divide into parties and groups, because we are divided enough anyway. Christ has brought us all together. Today, there was no this or that group, there was no division between male or female, or Greek or Jewish, or this or that party. We were all together as we should be in the church. All together in love, faith, hope, forgiveness,” the Abbot Sava said.

„No matter how many of us live here, the numbers don’t matter,” he added.

After the liturgy, Abbot Sava and the monks visited a Catholic Monastery of the Mother Teresa nuns in Pec, where nuns from around the world care for a dozen poor and abandoned persons with disabilities, including an old Serb woman, Radmila. They brought food and gifts for the nuns’ wards.

The Mother Teresa nuns often escort Radmila to Communion in Decani or monk Petar performs the communion ceremony in Pec. The monks were amazed by the nuns’ great sacrifice and struggle to help those who have been abandoned by all and who have been given much-needed care and love.
