An armed robbery was carried out approximately 9 am this morning at the NLB branch office in Veternik near Caglavica. Kosovo police arrested five suspects earlier this afternoon, the portal Indeksonline reported. The same portal previously published that €6,000 was stolen, however, it later stated that the amount of money has yet to be confirmed by the bank.
The masked attackers entered the bank armed with Kalashnikov rifles and initially escaped by car as soon as the robbery was finished, cited a Kosovo media police report.
Kosovo Minister of the Interior Bejtush Gashi was dismissed from duty the same day as the robbery, following the request of his party – AKR, confirmed the party secretary Rahim Pacolli.
Kosovo media speculated the dismissal came as a consequence of a series of robberies taking place, mainly in Pristina but also Kosovo wide. It is speculated that Mr. Ekrem Musta will replace him.
The arrest was carried out by an elite FIT unit. One further suspect is at large and “hiding somewhere in the hills around Pristina”, reports Indeksonline.
This is a second armed robbery in the last four days.
Four armed assailants stormed into the customs terminal at the Merdare crossing last Friday. At the time, no details were given as to whether any money was stolen.
