Names of places written in the Albanian language have been painted over on some road signs in the north of Kosovo less than a day after they were installed.
Yesterday, the existing monolingual signs in two alphabets were taken down, with the assistance of the Kosovo Police, on the road Mitrovica – Lesak – Jarinje, and replaced with bilingual ones – first in Albanian, then in Latin Serbian.
The sign installation was organized by the Kosovo Ministry of Infrastructure, Minister Liburn Aliu confirmed yesterday, stating that „in accordance with the laws of Kosovo“ they are removing „all Serbian traffic signs that are in Cyrillic and replacing them with official signs“.
Aliu also announced that this action will continue over the coming days.
This morning, however, some newly installed signs have been spray-painted, namely the part of the sign with the Albanian inscriptions.
Photos of unknown origin showing spray-painted signs in the towns of Leposavic, Lesak and Slatina were shared on social networks.
KoSSev also observed that the inscriptions were crossed out in some places in the north. In Grabovac, the Albanian name has been painted over both the signs at the village entrance and exit.
On the other hand, names in both languages are still visible on some sites. Among them is the road sign for the village of Rudare.
