Kosovan Minister of Agriculture, Faton Peci, met on Sunday with the new mayor of Leposavic, Lulzim Hetemi. Peci visited Hetemi in the municipal building situated in downtown Leposavic, which this mayor entered by force on Friday, with the support of special units of the Kosovo police.
On the same day, Hetemi’s other two colleagues in Zubin Potok and Zvecan also entered the municipal buildings by force.
Local Serbs are opposing the takeover of buildings and the work of Albanian mayors. They boycotted the April 23 elections, called after Serbs from the north left almost all Kosovo institutions.
Kosovo officials congratulated the police on the completed task. They defended the legality and justified the action in the North, while also accusing Serbia.
„Together with the Deputy Minister of the Interior, Blerim Gashani, I had the special pleasure of visiting Mr. Lulzim Hetemi, the president of the municipality of Leposavic, in his office today. We congratulated him on his new post and offered him all the support of the Government of the Republic of Kosovo,“ announced Faton Peci on Sunday.
He adds that as Minister of Agriculture, he told Hetemi about „plans“ and „multi-million dollar projects“ of the ministry he leads for „citizens of the municipality he leads, regardless of their ethnicity or anything else.“
„There’s a new sheriff in town!“ – declared a senior official of the Kosovo government, in English.
Previously, Kosovan Minister of Internal Affairs, Xhelal Svecla, also paid a visit to Hetemi.
Tensions are running rampant in the north after recent action taken by Kosovo authorities. The action in question was harshly criticized by numerous international officials, who have been urging Pristina to immediately de-escalate the situation and abstain from making unilateral moves.
Late last night, the Kosovo media reported that the mayors confirmed that all four were invited to a meeting scheduled for today at 9 a.m. by the US Ambassador Jeffrey Hovenier, but also that they plan to go to work in the buildings guarded by the special police before 8 a.m.
