Members of the Kosovo border police, together with customs officers, carried out an anti-smuggling action today in Strpce and Bosniak Mahala in North Mitrovica. A larger quantity of goods and several vehicles were seized, while eleven people were arrested, the Kosovo police confirmed.
In late 2021 – after the first „Transport“ action was carried out when a large number of commercial goods were seized in the Urosevac region – investigative actions within the „Transport 2“ action were launched due to suspicion that certain persons were engaged in „illegal trade.
The police confirmed that the operation was continued today in the region of Urosevac, i.e. Strpce and North Mitrovica.
„The Border Police Department and the Kosovo Customs inspected four locations (three in the municipality of Strpce and one in the municipality of North Mitrovica) and searched four vehicles suspected of transporting smuggled goods,“ the KP wrote in a statement.
During the search, they add, a significant amount of smuggled commercial goods was found and seized – groceries, alcoholic beverages, tobacco, and other goods without proper documents.
The police also stated that three vehicles were seized, while eleven men from Kosovo were arrested of the suspicion of involvement in smuggling.
The KP did not specify how many persons were arrested in Strpce and how many in North Mitrovica.
In North Mitrovica, the anti-smuggling action was carried out in a store located in the Bosniak Mahala.
A dozen heavily armed members of the Special Unit of the Kosovo Police, as well as customs officers, were stationed in front of the store.
They did not allow citizens to approach or enter the store in question.
Following the hours-long operation, the officers left the location. Just before they left, a truck carrying goods, which was parked in the yard of the store, also left Bosniak Mahala, accompanied by vehicles of the Kosovo Police and Kosovo Customs.
The head of the Kosovo Office, Petar Petkovic, reacted to today’s Kosovo Police operation, but only to the part of the action carried out in Strpce, stating that special units raided several stores in search of Serbian goods.
Petkovic also assessed that the Prime Minister of Kosovo, Albin Kurti, is using the „showdown“ with Serbian products for the purpose of intimidating Serbs.
