The United Opposition of Serbia (UOS) called on the citizens of Belgrade and Serbia to mark 1,000 days since the murder of Oliver Ivanovic this Monday, October 12th. The gathering, and the lighting of 1,000 candles, is scheduled to take place at 7 pm in front of the Church of St. Mark in Belgrade. In the meantime, the citizens of North Mitrovica were also invited to gather on the same day but an hour earlier – at the site of the murder of the most famous post-war Kosovo Serb politician.
Ivanovic’s former SDP GI associate, Marko Jaksic announced on social networks that the symbolic gathering of „1,000 candles for 1,000 days of silence“ will also be held in North Mitrovica. Jaksic left the SDP civic initiative in September last year when its current president Ksenija Bozovic decided to put the initiative on the joint electoral „Srpska Lista – Aleksandar Vucic“ list.
Jaksic called on admirers of the murdered politician to gather at 6 pm tomorrow in front of the GI SDP headquarters where Ivanovic worked – in Sutjeska Street in North Mitrovica, where he was also murdered with several shots to the back on the morning of January 16th, 2018.

„I hope that all of Oliver’s friends, acquaintances, admirers of his political legacy, but also all other people of goodwill from this city and the surrounding area who miss him and who think that the thunderous silence on his assassination is unacceptable, will join us,“ Jaksic said.
He also appealed to those who gather tomorrow to bear in mind the ongoing coronavirus pandemic and maintain physical distance and wear protective masks.
„Silence has gone on long enough, but it must speak out eventually,“ Jaksic stressed.
Organizers from the Serbian capital also pointed out that no one has been convicted for this political assassination so far, adding that at the same time „some of the suspects are walking around Belgrade freely and are at the top of the regime.“
