Inspectors working for the Tax Administration of Kosovo, who visited local businesses in North Mitrovica today, called on owners who have not registered their businesses in the Kosovo system to do so within the next seven days, adding that the deadline may be extended, the regional director of this body, Besim Halili, confirmed for KoSSev. He stated that inspections will continue over the coming days, including in other northern municipalities. Halili claims that their goal is not to punish the owners, but for them to register their businesses and start paying taxes. Finally, he announced that there would be consequences otherwise.
Inspectors of the Tax Administration of Kosovo (PAK) started visiting businesses in North Mitrovica last week.
The inspections started from the multi-ethnic settlement Bosniak Mahala, where they verified whether or not business entities there were registered in the Kosovo system with the assistance of the Kosovo police.
The regional director of the Tax Administration of Kosovo, Besim Halili, confirmed for KoSSev that PAK carries out activities to record registered businesses and invite those who are not registered to do so.
„There were almost 50 (businesses) registered in Bosniak Mahala, some were registered this week, but we are waiting for all of them to be registered,“ Halili said.
The inspectors also visited cafes and bars located on the Mitrovica promenade today.
PAK officials informed the owners that they are obliged to register within the next seven days, noting that there is a possibility of extending the deadline.
„Those who are not registered have one week to register, and if they ask, we can extend the deadline by a few more days, if they have problems with the documentation,“ he said.
He revealed that the team of inspectors who carried out the inspection today was made up of members of Albanian, Serbian, and Bosniak ethnicities, whose aim was to make a record of business, underlining that they must not be interpreted as punishment.
Inspectors, however, will visit these business entities again in seven days.
Halili further revealed what would happen if the owner refused to register.
„If they are not registered, we will register them ourselves. The tax administration has the right to register businesses by itself, regardless of the wishes of the owner. But we will not do that, because if they are registered by the tax administration, they will immediately be fined. The tax administration has the right to register a business back even six years because we don’t know when they started operating,“ said Halili.
On the other hand, the regional director of PAK added that if the owners register their businesses by themselves, they will pay taxes from that point on.
Halili noted that the PAK will proceed with the registration if the owners continue to refuse to do so on their own.
„The law says that for a business operating without a fiscal number, which is not registered, a fine of 500 euros follows immediately at the start, followed by other tax obligations,“ he added.
This official, however, alleged that their goal is not to punish, but for the owners to start paying taxes.
„The goal is not to punish anyone, the goal is to register businesses and comply with the tax administration law, we have nothing against anyone,“ he argued.
Halili confirmed that they will continue with the tour of other facilities in North Kosovska Mitrovica tomorrow.
„We have the intention to, in accordance with the possibilities, visit every business entity,“ he said.
He confirmed that activities are now being carried out in North Mitrovica, but also announced that the same inspections will be carried out in other municipalities in the north of Kosovo.
