Serbia’s Foreign Minister Marko Đurić accused Kosovo President Vjosa Osmani of “smuggling herself” into the United Nations building in New York on Thursday, but later appeared alongside her in a joint photo from an EU-hosted meeting with Western Balkan leaders.

Speaking to Serbian reporters, Đurić claimed that Osmani entered the UN headquarters using an accreditation from another delegation. He said Serbia’s delegation had submitted an official note of protest to the UN.

President Aleksandar Vučić went a step further, comparing Osmani’s presence at the UN to a “tourist visit.”

“Vjosa Osmani can join them too – pay for a helicopter, stay an hour, and then they’ll nicely escort her through and throw her out after the tourist time ends,” Vučić said.

Despite the harsh words, both Osmani and Đurić attended a formal meeting with EU High Representative Kaja Kallas on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly, where regional leaders discussed European integration and stability. Osmani’s office published a photograph from the “traditional meeting” showing her standing near Đurić.

Vučić also held a separate meeting with Kallas during his stay in New York.
