Serbian Democracy Leader Fined Over Protest During Pristina Ministers’ Visit

Aleksandar Arsenijević, leader of the Serbian Democracy party, was briefly detained by the Kosovo Police in North Mitrovica today after using a whistle to protest the visit of ministers from Pristina. Arsenijević was soon released but fined for disturbing the public order.

Three ministers from Pristina—Xhelal Svecla, Albulena Haxhiu, and Elbert Krasniqi—visited the northern region today. According to sources on the scene, the visit, which was not announced to Serbian media, included stops at Mayor Erden Atić’s office, the Vojni Remont site, and a walk along the promenade to the main bridge.

The Serbian Democracy leader, who used a whistle to express his discontent over the ministers’ tour, stated that three police officers immediately approached him, attempting to subdue him.

„In the North, because of our discontent—mine and that of a few other citizens—I was using this whistle, which clearly bothered them. Three officers approached me right away and tried to subdue me. I went calmly, they arrested me, and issued a fine for disturbing the public order, which we will appeal and refuse to pay because there is no basis for it,“ said Arsenijević.

This is not the first time Arsenijević has been detained. Earlier this month, on August 8, he and fellow Serbian Democracy official Stefan Veljković were arrested at Braća Milić Square near the main bridge in North Mitrovica. The two were protesting the repainting of Serbian tricolors and were released shortly after a larger group of locals gathered in protest, causing tensions to rise sharply.
