An ethnic Serb and Bosniak have been classified as suspects in a physical attack carried out against two Serbs in the Bosniak Mahala area of North Mitrovica last night, the Kosovo Police announced this morning.
The police received a report last night that two Serbs were physically attacked by an ethnic Albanian and „several other unknown persons“ in Nemanjina Street in Bosniak Mahala. The victims suffered physical injuries, after which they were sent for treatment.
The Kosovo Police classified a Kosovo Serb and a Bosniak as one of the attackers. No one has been arrested so far, the daily Kosovo Police report reads.
By the decision of the Prosecutor’s Office, the case is open and an investigation is underway.
Radio Kontakt Plus reported last night that two Serb boys were attacked by a larger group of Albanians. Today, however, while referring to police sources, the same radio is still confirming that a fight occurred between Serbs and Albanians.
Dragoslav Kostic, the father of one of the victims, said that they were attacked by approximately thirty Albanians.
Djuric: Last night’s lynching is part of the politically inspired tactics of intimidating the Serbs
The head of the Kosovo Office, Marko Djuric reacted to the attack, stating that „last night’s lynching is part of an organized and politically inspired tactics of intimidating the Serbian people in Kosovo“.
„This attack cannot be viewed outside the context of Albanian intentions to annex the northern part of Kosovska Mitrovica, that is, to integrate the Serbian part of the city into a united municipality of Kosovska Mitrovica,“ Djuric said.
He also urged the „Serbian brothers in Kosovska Mitrovica not to fall on provocations of this kind, because any thoughtless response would actually serve the wishes and expectations of extreme Albanians who seek on a daily basis the cause for the escalation of the conflict“.
