Employees of the Regional Water Company from South Mitrovica entered the premises of JP Vodovod Ibar, a water utility previously operating under the Serbian system in North Mitrovica, early this morning. The takeover was facilitated with the support of Kosovo police.
The Regional Water Company promptly replaced the signage of JP Vodovod Ibar with a trilingual sign reading „Regional Water Company D.D. Mitrovica,“ displayed first in Albanian, followed by English and Serbian. Additionally, the company’s flag was raised alongside the Kosovo flag, symbolizing the new administration.
Despite the change, the company’s doors remain open, and employees continue their work uninterrupted. According to staff, operations are expected to continue under the new administration, which will now likely transition to the Kosovo system.
Implementation of Agreement Signed in January
Regional Water Company Mitrovica Director Bashkim Kurti confirmed the move to KoSSev, explaining that today’s events are part of implementing an agreement signed in January with four northern municipalities.
„Since then, we have been the only institution licensed to provide these services. That is why we are here today—to implement that cooperation agreement,“ Kurti stated.
Regarding the staff of the previously Serbian-run water utility, Kurti noted that once he receives information from the director of JP Vodovod Ibar, a recruitment process would begin, prioritizing the current employees.
„For now, they will certainly remain at their workplaces,“ he added.
Kurti also confirmed that similar actions would follow in the remaining municipalities in the North.
After completing the takeover, water company employees and police officers left the premises.
