The former Polet restaurant turned into city’s bingo locations after the war was torched this night due to a still an unknown reason. The town’s central cult facility has been entirely destroyed. No human casualties were reported, but several other small private business facilities were damaged.
The fire was reported at approximately 3.18am, deputy commander of the Kosovo Police for the north region Besim Hoti confirmed for KoSSev.
The cafe-pub Polet was one of the oldest symbols of the city of Mitrovica before the war. The name was characteristic for old Yugoslav city pubs. Due to its fame from the times of the former Yugoslavia, this part of Mitrovica Town where this landmark was located and became the central location after the war was named after this cult place. It was also after the war when the entire place was turned into a bingo outlet.
„The fire was extinguished by five firefighting teams, however, the facility could not be saved because it was made of highly flammable, timber material. There are no damages to surrounding residential buildings, there are no injuries,“ Hoti said.
Asked if there was a possibility that the fire was planted on purpose, Hoti responded:
„At this moment we cannot know it, it will be examined by firefighting inspectors who are still on the ground, waiting for the fire to be entirely extinguished in order to start performing their work.“
