The 38th regular session of the North Mitrovica Municipal Assembly was held today, featuring five agenda points and an additional item introduced during the session. Despite not being previously announced to the media, the meeting remained open to the public.
Among the key discussions was the presentation of a report by the Kosovo Police commander for the northern region. Assembly members also approved the implementation of the municipal organogram decision and adopted a new regulation on job classification and organization.
However, the session’s most heated moment came at its conclusion when Assembly Chair Nedžad Ugljanin addressed the floor with strong accusations against Srpska Lista (SL), the leading political party representing Kosovo Serbs.
„Srpska Lista Seeks to Return, but Workers Remain Jobless“
Speaking in Serbian, Ugljanin criticized Srpska Lista for allegedly forcing municipal employees to resign, only to now seek a return to power while leaving those same workers unemployed.
“They are looking for a way back, while the workers they forced out remain on the streets. Those workers will stay jobless. They will not be reinstated under the Law on Civil Service,” Ugljanin declared.
According to him, the real victims are ordinary people, the majority population in the municipality, who have suffered the most.
Allegations of Hate Speech in the Election Campaign
Ugljanin also took aim at SL’s rhetoric during the recent election campaign, specifically accusing party leader Zlatan Elek of using inflammatory language.
“In their campaign, some SL leaders used hate speech against these institutions, the very same institutions they abandoned. Srpska Lista’s president, Zlatan Elek, stated during the election campaign: ‘We will cleanse the stench and enter with incense and candles,’” Ugljanin claimed.
Criticizing the use of religious symbols in political discourse, he added, “We all know where incense and candles belong—these are religious customs, not tools to boost one’s political standing through nationalism. That has no place in institutions.”
Promises of Transparency and Legal Action
Ugljanin further promised that his administration would uncover past abuses allegedly committed by SL while in power.
“If they bring incense and candles, we will bring a broom to sweep after them,” he said, vowing to release documents that purportedly reveal illegal activities.
“There is a wealth of documentation, and upcoming sessions will be particularly interesting for those leaders eager to return—leaders who abandoned the people and pressured them. We will continue the fight against criminal acts we believe have occurred. Some cases involve public assets being unlawfully transferred to private individuals,” he stated.
As an example, he cited an ongoing court case related to the Slovenian company Planika, as well as issues surrounding Trepča property near the Berilje buildings.
Praise for the Current Municipal Leadership
Ugljanin then praised the municipality’s progress under its current administration, contrasting it with SL’s tenure.
“You all know the condition we found the municipality in. Look at it now—does it look better or worse than before? Citizen access to services is much improved, and everything operates according to European standards,” he said.
