Man sentenced to 3 years 8 months in prison for the attempted murder of his wife

М.Т., who tried to kill his wife K.M. in May in Gornja Gusterica village, was sentenced to three years and eight months in prison. M.K. told RTV Kim that she is not satisfied with the verdict and announced an appeal, expressing suspicions of corruption and concern about her safety.

M. T. severely injured his wife by stabbing her with a knife 33 times on May 24th. He also inflicted minor injuries on their 11-month-old son.

„The verdict is not realistic, because it’s just three years and eight months. Murder attempts are punished more than murder itself. At the first hearing nobody asked me anything, I think it was a matter of some kind of connection and that a bribe was involved. In the coming days, I will be filing an appeal, but I think nothing will come out of it,“ said M.K.

M.T.’s sentence was reduced because the attempted murder was his first crime and because he expressed remorse, she added, emphasizing that the judicial system in Kosovo has failed.

„I assume that he will not serve a full sentence and that good behavior will be taken into account, so he will be out in a year and a half or two,“ said M.K., expressing concern about her safety.

Ruzica Simic from the NGO „Women’s rights“ said that she is appalled by the verdict, expecting at least a seven-year sentence.

„As a representative of women’s rights, I strongly oppose such penal policy. I had the opportunity to read the verdict in which the judge took as a mitigating circumstance the fact that he (M.T.) confessed, was deeply repentant and promised that he would never do such a thing. I am appalled by the verdict and that someone has tolerance for such an act,“ Simic told RTV Kim.

She also urged all women to react at the first sign of violence.
