The editorial staff of KoSSev portal has won the „Dusan Bogavac“ journalistic award for ethics and courage for 2018, the Independent Journalists’ Association of Serbia (NUNS) have announced.
The reason behind the decision, with a reference to the establishment of KoSSev four years ago, it stated:
„Over the past year, despite all the challenges, obstacles and pressures, the editorial staff has managed to defend the principles of brave, honest and independent journalism.“
KoSSev has gained great confidence of both the local community and the entire region with their attitude towards the journalistic profession, colleagues from Belgrade underlined.
Journalists Ranka Ivanoska from Vrbas (VOICE), Gordana Bjeletic from Pirot (TV N1), Tamara Grujic (RTS), the editorial board of the portal Juzne vesti from Nis, the editorial board of daily newspaper Čačanske novine, thevBeta news agency, freelancer Vladimir Kostic and columnist of daily Danas Zlatko Pakovic were on the shortlist for the „Dusan Bogavac“ award this year.
The jury was comprised of Milica Saric (CINS), Bojana Pavlovic (KRIK), Sanja Kljajic (Dojce Vele), Slavisa Lekic (NUNS) and Filip Mladenovic („Dusan Bogavac“ Foundation).
The award will be presented on Wednesday, October 24th.

About Dusan Bogavac (1931 – 1990)
Being a truthful and brave journalist in the eighties in Serbia meant dealing wisely and analytically with the problem of democratization of the society traumatized by the half-century-long political monopoly of the communist party. How to, peacefully and without larger tensions, shift Serbia, or the then FRY, from one-party to multiparty society, how to establish democratic institutions in a civilized way, how to make a legal state out of a party state? The search for answers to these questions motivated the late journalist Dusan Bogavac in his own professional engagement. He animated a large number of prominent intellectuals from all over Yugoslavia, he founded the „Solidarity Fund“ with his colleagues, which was intended for those journalists who, because of their truthfulness and courage, were left with no means to make a living. He wrote and published articles and books. He saw what was in store for us. He publicly warned about the war scenario, proposing a civil, peaceful resolution of the crisis, through dialogue and negotiations. A negative media campaign, being dismissed from work, nor his life being in danger had prevented him from asking taboo questions truthfully and bravely. He was prevented by his premature death in the autumn of 1990, at 59 years of age, as a sad epilogue of persecution, threats, insults and everything else that accompanies journalists when dealing with investigative and analytical journalism in these areas.
